Oh My Word, Someone’s Four

Rachael,

It’s hard to believe you have gotten so big right before my very eyes. By this time today we will have celebrated you with our little family last night at Chuck-E-Cheese. Yes, we’re that kind of crazy this year, but we know how much you have talked about it in the past and wanted to go spoil you with sensory overload for a while. hehe. And you will have opened your present from us. [Thank you for that tackle-hug with your thank you… I could feel God’s hug in your warm arms of true gratitude.) You will also have slept your first nap and night-time in your “new” bunked bed.

Congratulations on being SO BIG to get to sleep way up on top in your “tree fort”. Tonight we’ll add your princess poster from your birthday party up there to make the little space more of yours. And may I never forget your heartfelt “… thank you,” that poured from your lips as you stood back and admired your new space of independence. It caught me unexpected and melted my heart, little girl.

Maybe it’s in bunking the beds and you getting to pick out your large-family birthday party theme this year, or maybe it’s in your having your first (surprise) slumber party with your sweet little friend, Josie, tonight, but baby girl… you are getting SO BIG!

I love that little wild smile that takes over your eyes,

your uncoordinated dance moves to every movie’s ending credits, your “watch me” glance when you want to be caught being amazing, your “just like us” moments you share with me when pointing out others’ brown eyes, how you get lost in trying to make our little Hannah smile and making those “just you two moments”, Image

how you sing at the top of your lungs in the backseat of the van – oblivious to the key and our ability to hear you, how you get lost in bookworm bliss – begging for one more story of snuggling and imagination, how you have a certain little out of control laugh that only you and Abi share together.

Rachael, you make my heart so full. I couldn’t delight in you more.

It has been such an indescribable blessing getting to be your mommy – soaking in your world right beside you.

I am so grateful to God for giving me you, my Rachael.

So as we go about our day today, celebrating you, I just want to say for today and for always…

Rachael, my dearest, I love you so. You are my delight, indeed.

And yes… we will still grow our hair out like Rapunzel together. 😉

– love you, my Rachael.

A Catch-Up

Just wanted to put in here a catch-up post from homeschooling. We’ve been taking a break due to Christmas for nearly a month now –That’s a nice advantage of homeschooling. But I wanted to share a little discovery fun that Rachael, Abi and I had on one of our homeschooling nature walks.

We had been discussing light and the affects of light on items. We discussed shadows and took the opportunity to check out some shadows at various times in the day. Along with our shadow viewing, we decided to take our magnifying glasses and observe plants up close. We also collects items that would fit in a sandwich bag in which to make nature pictures.

Waiting

This Christmas I am overwhelmed as usual by my gratefulness for our little family. I am so blessed to delight in our three little girls and this holiday season has given me extra time to say extra thank you’s to God for His gracious gift of our children.

And as I have said my thank you’s and continue to do likewise, there is a small flicker of yearning that draws me to tears as I write this. A flicker of desire… for the little one or little ones God will bring into our family in the future that are currently enduring the hardships that will bring them into the system. They could already be in the system, trying to reunite with a family that cannot keep them for whatever reason. Or worse yet, my precious little one(s) could be enduring the very thing that will bring them to our home. My babies… my babies…

It’s the heart that God has been stitching in us all. It’s the heart of God that presses Rachael to say with full confidence, “we have empty beds, so let’s have kids come stay with us. And if they have Mommies and Daddies to go home to then they can go home later, but if not, we’ll ‘dopt them and they can have us for their family.”

It’s the heart of God that brings tears to my eyes and breaks my heart in the beauty of adoption and the process that’s on the horizon.

It’s not with naivety… it’s going to be really hard. It’s going to have unknown challenges and hurts and loss. It’s going to have unimaginable frustrations with the system and if we see them go home, while we’ll be advocating for their best, it’ll break our hearts to say goodbye. And it’s going to be amazing, delighting in the little steps forward and wrapping a little one in the love of Jesus that they never thought imaginable. It’s going to be like nothing we’ve ever done. Thankless and rewarding all in one. And everything about it will be right for us… because it’ll push us to see this world through God’s eyes as we walk beside the American orphan, even if just for a season.

So, sweet little one(s) out there this Christmas, know that you are on my mind. And amidst the excitement, picture-taking and delight of centering our day around acknowledging the coming of our Savior to this earth, know that my heart yearns for you.

We are waiting, sweet little one(s), and praying for you.
