{"id":20597,"date":"2020-03-05T19:05:23","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T17:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/todayslegacy.wordpress.com\/2020\/03\/05\/you-may-live-in-rural-africa-if\/"},"modified":"2020-03-05T19:05:23","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T17:05:23","slug":"you-may-live-in-rural-africa-if","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/todayslegacy.net\/index.php\/2020\/03\/05\/you-may-live-in-rural-africa-if\/","title":{"rendered":"You May Live in Rural Africa if&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8211; first name options include objects, Holidays, and days of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you have to look up a picture of a squirrel on the internet to explain the American school worksheet to your Kindergartener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you no longer barter for your daily produce because they know you\u2019re not a tourist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; buying said produce involves a semi-formal conversation regarding the vendor\u2019s welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; your name is your job title and your child is respectfully referred to as \u201cgirl\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/todayslegacy.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/03\/img_1441.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20592\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You may live in rural Africa if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you can\u2019t remember what version of British, Kenyan, South African, or American English vocabulary needs to be used in the big city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you wake up confused because the rooster did NOT crow at 4a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you begin talking to your English-speaking friend in the wrong language without realizing it when trying to figure out directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; said directions involving no paved roads and a downed tree as a landmark doesn\u2019t make you flinch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you\u2019ve been asked to name a stranger\u2019s newborn baby you just met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/todayslegacy.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/03\/img_2183.jpg?w=768\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20593\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You may live in rural Africa if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; at least one child has arrived at a destination without shoes, you\u2019re not Afrikaans, and you only notice because the sand is hot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; all-day shopping only involves a store or two that takes three hours round trip to visit and has 3-4 total aisles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; your kids giggle while eating broccoli because it\u2019s a rare find of a treat during tourist season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; a tropical Christmas season is only announced by the Chinese store music and has no curb appeal to the nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you are asked to carry a 50lb bag of rice, a large grocery sack of raw peanuts, and a sheet-wrapped bundle of ? to someone\u2019s cousin because you mention driving through that city in a few hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/todayslegacy.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/03\/img_0609.jpg?w=768\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20594\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You may live in rural Africa if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; the next public toilet is three hours away so you warn the kids to \u201cgo now or forever hold your&#8230;\u201d-well, you get the idea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; the stars are brilliant street lights when the sun goes down at 5p.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you sweep your Sunday school space with a tree branch, kick out rotting fruit, and chase away chickens before laying down a tarp floor for your class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; finding strawberries or blueberries once a year needs a national holiday marker on the calendar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you go to bed a half hour after your kids because, let\u2019s face it, there\u2019s nothing to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/todayslegacy.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/03\/img_1861.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20595\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You may live in rural Africa if&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; you have witnessed unexplainable joy amongst what could be cast off as desperate ruin, but is actually greater depth of perspective than material satisfaction could ever know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/todayslegacy.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/03\/img_1777.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20596\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Oh, rural Africa, how we love you despite all your quirks.
